School latrines (2011)

Latrines or toilets are essential for any school. The latrines have been built downwind from the classrooms. Ventilated latrines offer improved sanitation by eliminating flies and smell through air circulation. The addition of a chimney or fluepipe, 150mm in diameter and about 2.5 meters high, when fitted onto the concrete slab over the sealed pit, creates a temperature difference up draught, drawing air and gases from the pit. Odours rise through the chimney and disperse.

Latrine construction can be dangerous, especially considering the weight of the brick structure which can collapse if proper measures and reinforcement are not taken.

We have already constructed one latrine block on the school campus, complete with 12 toilets. You’ll notice we put in a partition to separate 5 girls from 5 boys’ toilets; 2 toilets on the end face the opposite direction and are intended for staff.
